Seat Unit

Can a storage unit expense be written off on your taxes?

My husband's job reassigned us to another city and we were forced to use a storage unit until we were able to find a house. Can this expense be written off of our taxes? Please document your information source. Thanks!

  1. Storage expenses. You can include the cost of storing and insuring household goods and personal effects within any period of 30 consecutive days after the day your things are moved from your former home and before they are delivered to your new home. Publication 521 http://www.irs.gov/publications/p521/ix01.html
  2. We had the same situation and our accountant claimed it on our taxes with no problem, it is considered part of our moving expense (mileage to move for a job is tax deductible too). Check with your accountant or tax person.
  3. Possibly. If you are eligible for and claim the Moving Expense Deduction, that would be a legitimate moving expense. Here's a link to the IRS Tax Topic on it. There are links to the instructions and Form 3903 there. http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc455.html
  4. Possibly, for 30 days. See http://www.irs.gov/publications/p521/ar02.html#d0e1315
